In May 1932 thousands of World War I veterans began gathering in Washington, D.C., in order to pressure Congress to pass the Patman Bonus Bill. The legislation called for the immediate payment of war bonuses for World War I veterans. Under legislation passed with the approval of veterans groups in 1924, payments had been deferred, with interest, until 1945. Continuation pay is a direct cash payout, like a bonus, available to Service members enrolled in the Blended Retirement System (BRS). It is targeted at the mid-career mark, payable between completion of eight years of service, but before completion of 12 years of service (calculated from a Service member’s Pay Entry Base Date). Most Service members will be eligible for continuation pay, but 2014-08-05 Bonus Army at Anacostia Flats. In May 1932, 10,000 of these ex-soldiers marched on Washington in an attempt to persuade Congress to pass the Patman Bill.
