What is Kanban WIP? WIP limits are important in a workflow represented through the Kanban framework. WIP stands for “work-in-progress.” It represents the total number of tasks being worked on at the same time — whether by a team or an individual. Kanban WIP helps prevent work overloads and improve workflows.

To reduce WIP, Kanban teams set WIP Limits that define the maximum number of tasks that can simultaneously exist in given columns. For example, if a team places a WIP limit of three in Doing in the above Kanban, then they are only allowed to be simultaneously working on three items at once. Kanban uses WIP limits, whereas Scrum utilizes a Backlog. See this blog post for some more of the major differences between Kanban and Scrum. Flow of work is incredibly important for a Kanban board or Kanban system to function properly. Everything must organically move along and progress as it should in order to be delivered on time. The implementation of WIP limits allows you to complete single work items faster, by helping your team to focus only on current tasks. WIP limits are needed to balance 2+ steps of the workflow. So that the constraining step (the bottleneck) doesn't get overloaded.

Little’s Law is the Kanban WIP Formula for Lean Software Development In 1961, John Conant Little made a huge contribution to software development with his mathematical theory of probability around queueing. It has been applied both to Kanban and Lean software development to determine WIP. The original formula is:

So if you know the team and have a rough idea of who's going to be the Constraint - set the limit to the number of people in that group + some buffer (buffer size depends on the typical duration of tasks). These are just a few of Kanban Tool's happy customers: Limiting the amount of WIP in the system is one of the six core practices of Agile Kanban. Setting WIP limits helps teams become more productive and deliver faster. Learn how WIP limits are represented on Kanban boards, and how teams use them. On a Kanban board, a WIP limit is applied to all “in-progress” columns. The first and last columns on a Kanban board do not have WIP limits. In Figure 3, assuming the WIP limit is 5, the testing column is exceeding the limit as illustrated by the bold column title and the change in color to red. Kanban (Japanese: 看板, meaning signboard or billboard) is a lean method to manage and improve work across human systems.

Kanban is a lean software development methodology that focuses on just-in-time delivery of functionality and managing the amount of work in progress (WIP). Kanban (Japanese 看板, signboard or billboard) is a lean method to manage and improve work across human systems. This approach aims to manage work by balancing demands with available capacity, and by improving the handling of system-level bottlenecks. WIP limits (work-in-process limits) are fixed constraints, typically implemented on Kanban boards, that help teams actively eliminate waste from their processes. WIP limits enable teams to optimize their workflows for value delivery. The main idea behind WIP limits can be explained by this simple phrase: Stop starting, start finishing.
