The red grape variety (also Arjunção) originates from Portugal. The parentage is unknown. Nothing is known about a possible genetic relationship with the Listán Prieto variety (with synonym Arjunção).

Listan is an early ripening variety which is harvested in the early days of September. The must undergoes a number of pressings and the product at the end of each pressing is used in the production of different products.

It's been used mostly for bulk rosé until recently, where quality-minded, natural winemakers are launching tart, high-tannin reds made from País old vines. Listán Prieto generally has a poor reputation locally, condemned to bulk wine status and often planted in the wrong areas. Mind you, that’s beginning to change, thanks to producers like Bouchon, Huaso de Sauzal and Roberto Henríquez in Chile and Cadus, Cara Sur, Durigutti and El Esteco in Argentina, not to mention the rebirth of interest in the variety back in its native Canary Islands.
